Excited to go skiing with my favourite Polak today. Introducing him to the boyfriend at lunch. I really hope they like each other.

Good heavens, this could be a disaster.

So this Polak, he saved my life whilst my family & I were living in Mombasa many moons ago. When I say saved, I mean he put himself in grave danger to save me. I’ve been eternally grateful since.

Little did I know I’d save his too a few years later. We’re even Steven in that sense. We’ve developed a special kind of friendship over the years. Something that could last a lifetime no matter the distance and direction of the choices we make.

Also back then, his German was terrible but spoke better Swahili. I didn’t speak a lick of Polish & my Swahili was subpar. It’s how we communicated then for months until one day, I heard him speak French whilst on the phone with his Mum. I remember throwing a shoe at him. The entire time I struggled communicating in Swahili when we both spoke French.

MFer. We laugh about it til this day.

Me: That is hilarious!
Also Me: I'm a dumb American. Better get fluent in a second language.

@daniel

I don’t think it’s dumb, really. Geographically, especially Switzerland being landlocked, we’re exposed to many languages & dialects because of our neighbours. We have four official languages. Most Europeans default to English when they don’t understand each other anyway.

@lo I don't really see how it's going to fit into my life, but I've always wanted to escape to Patagonia. Some Español would come in handy.

@daniel

Patagonia is beautiful. Torres del Paine is one of the most beautiful places in the world. But that’s also because I kind of like mountains. Unless you go off the beaten path there, some Spanish will come in handy. Otherwise, most of the guides speak English.

@lo I do want updates on your tiny house btw. We have tons of wilderness here and you can walk around for days alone, but no way could I put up a legal structure. Better to ask for forgiveness?
