When I was a kid, you would buy a phone and ... it was just a phone. All you did was talk to other people on it by dialing a number. It did not have apps.

Also, it was plugged in to a wall and you would only be able to walk as far as the cable would stretch.

Only one person could use it at a time, and if you didn't answer it when it rang, you'd never know who called.

If you called your own phone number and hung up fast enough, you could make your own phone ring.
