#Thankful for the simple things, today...

I remember when you could only get #stevia as a nutritional supplement in the U.S., because of some stupid law, likely drafted by a chemical company lobbyist.

Now it's everywhere, which I guess is a bummer if you hate the taste, but I'm fond of the stuff. 😂

@rl_dane I remember when I first heard about Stevia and I bought a plant to sweeten my coffee.

@dm

lol how did that work?

I'd imagine the leaves were kinda bitter.

I think when I first bought it in the 90s, it was just shredded dried leaves, like the way you get dried mint today.

You had to be REALLY careful how much you added, otherwise it was just a bitter mess.

It's a LOT better with modern extracts. ;)

@rl_dane Yeah, it didn't work too well lol. Turned me off of Stevia for a while.

@dm

I think a lot of folks who avoid it today probably haven't tried it in the past decade. ;)

You can still OD and get the nasty bitter taste, but not nearly as easily as before.

But some people are just more sensitive to the bitterness. My aunt hates #Stevia, but she loves (checks notes) Karela (Indian Bitter Melon).... Hmmm....

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

😂

@rl_dane @dm I have a giant bag of leaves that I’ve been trying to get through for years, never noticed any bitter taste.

@daniel @dm

You're probably just using the right amount and/or aren't as sensitive to that particular bitterness.

I think the senses of taste and smell are probably a lot more varied than people realize. There's the well-known genetic ability to smell (or not smell) that "asparagus smell," but also, I can barely smell #kimchi, while others in my family will smell it clear across the house and start crying for me to eat it outside. XD
