I was raised as a charismatic Christian, speaking in tongues, prophesy, expecting (and hearing about) miracles, Sunday school, church retreats, youth group during the week, the whole nine yards. My parents had significant intellectual chops, but they'd had experiences that led them this way, so there it is. I wasn't an every Sunday attender during college but I did go occasionally and felt guilty when I didn't. I was active in the church as an adult up until maybe the past 8-10 years. /cont.

@chiasm “Christians are no better than anyone else, and in many ways they may be worse, from the point of view of hypocrisy”

I’ve seen and heard this so many times now and I’m sure you have as well. Always sounded like a wrong mindset.

@jordan I would have agreed with you about that, but with the past 4-5 years of blatant evangelical support for torture, mistreatment of the poor and marginalized, etc., and the past year of "I don't need a vaccine, I have God"--well, I've had to change my mind.

@chiasm @jordan I’m not sure that we have anything better than polls to help us figure out what people think, but I’m not very confident in their results. You’re probably right about the vaccine, but I have a hard time blaming anyone because every source of information has an agenda these days and the whole truth isn’t part of it.

@chiasm @jordan As for the mistreatment of the poor and marginalized, I disagree. Almost all of the organizations that I know of that help these groups are in fact Christian based. I suspect that people in these roles in government have a skew towards being Christian too. I’m not sure how I could prove all of this though. No one takes polls if they can help it.

@daniel @chiasm yes I disagree as well. I don’t know the number but I wouldn’t be surprised if Christian orgs are the leading donators to people in need. There are so so many organizations that help all over the world.
@daniel @chiasm a lot we’re worried and still are. We cut years of safety protocols to bring the vaccine to market. So I can’t blame people for worrying, heck I did to a degree. But regardless that choice lies with that person no matter their religion or lack of.
